Pete Howe (Well nearer 60) with Fran Howe
NAME: Pete Howe
HOW LONG SUPPORTED LEEDS?
Well over 50 years LOL
It goes back a long way – to Gary Sprake’s debut (March 1962) as a 16 year old away to Southampton. Alas Leeds lost 4 – 1 but that was right at the start of the Revie era and, although we never though it at the time (just avoiding relegation form the old Division 2 that year) there were great years not far away. I was 8 at the time and trying to become a goalkeeper. The Sprake debut was my schoolboy inspiration.
HOW MANY GAMES DO YOU GO TO A SEASON?
Only 15 to 20 alas due to work and family commitments.
WHERE DO YOU SIT?
I stand (not sit) in the North stand. The only place to be.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE EVER LEEDS GAME?
For sheer disbelief it has to be winning at Old Trafford in the FA Cup as a League One club. The 1972 Cup Final is also up there but solely for the result and not the quality of the football.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ALL-TIME LEEDS PLAYER AND WHY?
Far too young to remember John Charles so it has to be Peter Lorimer. Gary Sprake was my schoolboy hero though.
WHAT S THE FUNNIEST THING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN AT A LEEDS GAME?
One of the funniest moments was at a Champions League match towards the end of the Woodgate – Bowyer trial – “he’s here he’s there he wears no underwear, Lee Bowyerrrr”. Classic.
FAVOURITE AWAY GROUND?
The City ground in Nottingham, maybe because Nottingham is my second favourite city to Leeds. Away grounds don’t inspire me that much. Its the Leeds fans that make the difference, not the surroundings.
Probably at home to Barcelona in October 2000. Pity about Rivaldo’s last minute equaliser though.
Alas playing every Saturday and training midweek during the Revie era and beyond. My “new” wife’s first ever match was in 2000 so my risk assessment tells me it must be the O’Leary era before it all went downhill.
Thank you Pete………..
